A Diwali Celebration

The nursing home is located at south Kolkata. Behind the building there is a slum, a dwelling of around hundred families whose daily earning comes from rikshaw pulling, maid servant-ship etc. In front of nursing home two high rise buildings are there, dwellers of which generally speaking comes from well to do families. But, at Diwali night, crackers bursts from all sides, an equal society emerge in making sound louder and louder so that every other problems of life can be erased… obviously for a singular night… the Diwali night.

It was around five in the afternoon when they fired first chocolate bomb behind the nursing home. Since morning, occasional sound of firing of crackers could be heard but this five o’clock bursting was a signal. It was answered by a dozen of chocolate bombs from the high rise buildings. And the competition started – who could make more sound… and it went on and on.

At seven in the evening it was difficult to hear a person standing just three feet away for the sound of bursting of crackers was so intense. Suddenly, the matron came running to our doctor’s chamber.

Doctor… the teacher… come, come.

Doctor rushed to the octogenarian teacher’s cabin. The teacher was lying on his bed, murmuring “Hare Krishna” and tears rolling down his cheek.

Doctor asked… how are you feeling sir?

Oh, my boy… it’s okay now, for a few minutes my Lord left me, and everything was dark… now I can feel my master again.

Doctor came out of the cabin and went to the slum.

Hey boys… there’s a nursing home over here… ya I know tonight is Diwali night but please fire your crackers somewhere else. Here some patients’ condition is bad and they can’t take rest because of this sound.
